Recyclable Retort Pouch Safe, High-Barrier and Ready for 121–135°C

Recyclable Retort Pouch Safe, High-Barrier and Ready for 121–135°C

More food brands are looking for packaging that is safe, high-temperature resistant, and better for the environment. That’s why recyclable retort pouches are becoming a strong alternative to traditional cans and jars.

At Wellfa, we use a recyclable structure ALOXPET/NY/RCPP, a high-performance material that can handle 121–135°C retort sterilization without bursting or delaminating.

What Is ALOXPET/NY/RCPP?

This structure is made from:

ALOXPET: a high-barrier material that offers protection similar to aluminum foil

NY (Nylon): gives strength and puncture resistance

RCPP: a retort-grade CPP layer that provides heat-seal strength and can withstand high temperatures

ALOXPET is the key material here.

It offers excellent barrier performance, very close to PET foil, while staying lightweight, flexible, and transparent.

Barrier Performance Comparison: ALOXPET vs. Regular PET (Without ALOX)

Here is a simple comparison between ALOXPET/NY/RCPP and standard PET/NY/RCPP. You can see clearly how ALOX coating improves barrier performance, especially for products that need longer shelf life or high-temperature sterilization.

ALOX coating makes a huge difference.

Compared with regular PET/NY/RCPP:

  • The oxygen barrier is20 to 70 times better.
  • The moisture barrier is 2 to 4 times better.
  • Food stays fresher for longer
  • Colors, aroma, and sensitive ingredients are better protected
  • More suitable for long-distance shipping and export markets
  • Better stability during 135°C high-temperature sterilization

Is ALOXPET/NY/RCPP Recyclable?

ALOXPET/NY/RCPP is classified under recyclable flexible plastic materials.

The recyclability level depends on local recycling systems, but compared with traditional mixed-metal retort pouches, this structure is much easier to process and more widely accepted.

It is considered part of the #7 “other recyclable plastics” category in many regions due to its multi-layer but non-metal composition.

Why Are Retort Pouches Better Than Cans?

  1. Lighter and easier to transport
Up to 70% lighter than cans, reducing shipping and storage costs.
  2. Faster heating and cooling
Food inside heats more evenly and cools faster, helping retain flavor, color, and nutrients.
  3. More convenient for consumers
Easy to open, easy to store, easy to dispose of.
  4. Better appearance and branding
Unlike metal cans, you can print beautiful designs on the packaging bags and also customize the bag shape..
  5. Lower carbon footprint
Less material, lower weight, and easier logistics contribute to more sustainable packaging.
